Mit öffentlichen Mitteln geförderte Forschung sollte - nicht zuletzt im Interesse der Wissenschaft selbst - auch möglichst gut öffentlich zugänglich sein. Der Schweizerische Nationalfonds (SNF) erlässt daher auf den 1. September 2007 die „Weisung bezüglich Open Access zu wissenschaftlichen Publikationen aus von ihm geförderten Projekten“.
