Eine Grignard-Verbindung entsteht, wenn ein Alkylhalogenid (z.B. Bromethan BrCH2CH3) in Anwesenheit von trockenem Ether mit metallischem Magnesium reagiert.
Das Magnesium-Atom schiebt sich zwischen die Kohlenstoff-Halogen-Bindung. Zwei freie Elekronenpaare von Ethermolekülen koordinieren an das Magnesium und stellen das zur Stabilität notwendige Elektronenoktett (siehe: Oktettregel) her.
